Asthma Research
Asthma is a condition in which the airways are narrowed because of some outside stimulant that is an allergic or irritant to the airways. This does not happen if the lungs are normal. The mast cells throughout the airways release histamine and leukotrienes that cause muscle tightening, increasing mucus and white blood cells in the area. This activity is because of an allergen or some substance that is recognized as foreign that comes into the airways.
Since a large number of people troubled by asthma have few attacks and live a normal life, the best prevention is to identify the allergens and avoid them. Cockroaches, house mites, feathers and animal dander are among the most common allergens in the house. Many of these can be eliminated by getting rid of pets, and eliminating wall to wall carpeting to cut down on house mites. Cessation of smoking will get rid of irritating smoke, and roaches can be eliminated by an exterminator. Treatment for asthma in more severe cases should be under a doctor's care for drugs that are the most effective for the patient. There are many drugs from which you may choose the best for you, as well as herbs for natural treatments.
