Aphasis

Aphasia Research

Each area of the brain controls some specific body part or activity. When a person loses the ability to understand language or the power to speak or any other comprehension of language as a result of brain damage, it is described as aphasia This does not necessarily affect intelligence, it only affects the part of the brain that controls language.

With most people, the part of the brain that houses language ability is in the left hemisphere, but with a few people it can be on the right. There are many conditions that may develop aphasia: a stroke or tumor or any condition that may cause damage to the brain in the centers that control language.

The language centers are so complex that a variety of defects in language may affect a person with aphasia. Some people lose only the ability to write and others may lose only the ability to speak. Some people may have only impairment of speech or inability to select the precise words that are needed. This is not a dangerous condition, since the person might be perfectly healthy in all areas but language.  Most people with mild injuries may recover completely, but treatment under a doctor’s care should be started at once because early treatment will be helpful for full recovery. Early treatment of aphasia by a speech therapist will also help.  The doctor should get a diagnosis of the condition and try to eliminate or control any underlying conditions that may be the cause.

Regardless of the treatment, a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition and appropriate exercise will not only benefit and help prevention of this condition but will do so for almost any health problem.  For more information on a healthy lifestyle, please view my articles on “Keys to the Century Mark”, and “Alzheimer’s” at no charge by clicking on the link below.
