Ankle Pain

Ankle Pain

Most pain in the ankle is the result of an ankle sprain. There are many ligaments in the ankle and any of them can be injured in an ankle sprain. Most sprains occur when the foot is turned toward the other foot which causes severe tension to be placed on the outside muscles and ligaments of the ankle. This happens frequently in sports because of the spikes in the sport shoes. The extent of the injury depends upon how much injury to the ligaments by the stretching or tearing.

Treatment will depend on the extent of the injury which the doctor can determine from a physical examination or xrays if mecessary. The doctor will outline the treatment which for a mild sprain may not require anything more than applying ice packs to the area and an elastic bandage. For more extensive damage it can range from a cast applied to the ankle to even surgery.
