Allergies
An allergic or hypersensitivity reaction is a conditon in which the body's immune system reacts to defend the body against an allergen. Allergens can be a variety of substances including food, plants, drugs, dust, pollens, animals, or stronger things such as a bee sting. Allergic reactions can be mild such as slight itch, sneezing, watery eyes or nose; some reactions are extremely dangerous, such as difficulty in breathing, low blood pressure, dizziness, heart malfunction and severe anxiety.
The first step in treatment is to identify the allergen. There are many tests that can be used to identify the allergen, including a blood test or a skin test. Under a doctor's care there are many options for treatment. The best treatment, of course, is to avoid the allergen. If it is a food, stop eating it. If it is a pet, it must be given away. If the allergen cannot be eliminated from the environment, injections may be given to immunize the patient. A substantial number of allergens are in food, so eliminating allergic foods are a big step in treatment. Antihistamine drugs are a major part of medical treatment under direction of your doctor.
