Acute Stress Disorder

Acute Stress Disorder

Acute stress disorder is similar to post traumatic stress disorder but differs because it lasts only about four weeks and begins four weeks after the time of the traumatic event. The event must have been a severe stressful event such as death threatening to the person or threat of great physical injury to another person. The person involved must have had a severe attack of anxiety or panic in which the person has a loss in orientation, a speedup of heartbeat, unable to breathe normally and all bodily functions accelerated.

A healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition and exercise will be beneficial, but the major focus of the treatment is counseling and psychotherapy. The therapist should be a sympathetic person that lets the patient know that the pain is valid but encouragement is given to the person to face up to the memories during behavioral therapy. Drugs may be advisable under a doctor's care in anxiety and panic disorders.
