Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis
When inflammation becomes present in the brain and spinal cord because
of damage to the myelin sheath, it is called acute disseminated
encephalomyelitis. This is a rare neurological disorder where the
myelin sheath is infected and unable to protect the spinal cord. The
ADE usually follows a viral infection.
Symptoms of ADE are confusion, fever, rigidity, involuntary
movement, headaches and lethargy. If the symptoms are severe, it could
rapidly develop into a fatal coma.
Treatment of ADE, similar to other neurological disorders, is
limited. Persons with mild symptoms may have complete recovery, but
severe cases can be fatal. Any person with ADE should be under
the care of a neurologist for diagnosis and effective treatment.
Although present methods of treatment are limited, much new research
is underway and encouraging because of stem cell studies. Regardless of
the treatment, a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition and exercise
will not only help to prevent any cure of ADE, it will help almost any
health problem.
