Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China where the practice goes back more than 2500 years. The Chinese theory is that it is effective by affecting the pathways of energy called meridians that cover the entire body. The Western medical community has not given acupuncture a wholehearted acceptance; however, there are many people who feel they have been helped by acupuncture from pain relief in many areas including lower back pain, headaches and arthritis.

The theory is that the meridians must be in exact balance for good health. Poor health habits such as not getting enough sleep and eating the wrong kinds of foods cause the meridians to become unbalanced. Acupuncture treatment balances the pathways with fine needles. Medical researchers in the Western world feel that the needles induce the release of endorphins and cortisone which are natural pain killers of the body. This evidently in many cases gives pain relief, but the underlying cause must be corrected which can easily be done by a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition, exercise and weight control.

Many health practitioners feel that acupuncture fills a certain niche and has merit. At present there are more than 10,000 licensed acupuncture practitioners in the United States.
