Acrocyanosis Research
Acrocyanosis is a condition that causes the hands to have a bluish color as a result of an abnormal eruption of the tiny blood vessels in the hands and sometimes in the feet. This may cause a chill in the affected parts in cold weather and excessive sweating in warm weather. This is a mild condition and is not a medical emergency, as it rarely requires any treatment. Although this is a disorder in the cardiovascular system, it does not necessarily indicate peripheral arterial disease.
Treatment is not usually necessary as this is a benign condition that results in more of a cosmetic condition than medical. A sympathectomy which disrupts the fibers of the sympathetic nervous system will reduce the blueness but this is an extreme procedure that is rarely appropriate.
